What is this product?
Amitraz tick collars (brand: Preventic) release the formamidine acaricide amitraz continuously over 90 days, providing tick detachment and kill through alpha-2 adrenergic agonism and monoamine oxidase inhibition in arachnids. Amitraz is unique among pet pesticides in its pharmacological profile: it causes tick paralysis and detachment within 24-48 hours, making it valuable for tick-transmitted disease prevention. However, amitraz has significant mammalian effects — it is an alpha-2 adrenergic agonist causing sedation, bradycardia, and hypothermia in dogs at toxic doses, and inhibits monoamine oxidase, making it absolutely contraindicated in diabetic animals (causes transient hyperglycemia by inhibiting insulin release). NEVER use on cats — amitraz causes severe CNS depression in felines.
